What do you think of when you hear the words: rolling lawns, total bliss, and memories in the making? After having the complete pleasure of visiting Martha's Vineyard last week for a travel review, I will forever associate those words with Winnetu Oceanside Resort, in Edgartown.
From the second we entered the main lobby, right up until we left to catch our ferry, we were treated and made to feel like family.
The island's majestic clapboard beauty, is situated amongst rolling, perfectly manicured grounds, and is a short walk down a sandy path to beautiful South Beach. It is the perfect setting for unforgettable family vacations, reunions, romantic getaways for two, as well as corporate functions, and destination weddings.
Offering guests an array of options, from 1-4 bedroom suites, to newly constructed private cottages, as well as home rentals that have anywhere from 3-5 bedrooms, you are certain to find the accommodation to suite your parties needs comfortably.
My biggest pet peeve when traveling is having to sleep on an uncomfortable mattress. That was certainly not an issue here. The bedding is top of the line, and after a day spent outdoors in the fresh air, with a full belly, I slept like a baby.
The bathrooms are well-lit and well stocked with toiletries. Our room had two large screen televisions, a kitchenette, two bathrooms, comfy robes, big billowy pillows, books for all ages and interests, and an overabundance of fluffy towels.
The hotel is home to Lure Grill which was voted 2012 Silver Award Winner, for the Best of the Cape and the Islands water view restaurant. It also received Fodor's highest ranking for the island's choice dining 2011.
We dined while overlooking harbor views, as the sun began to set, and were utterly charmed by our waiter, Alfonso. Lure's chef, Matthew Passalacqua, gives the word art form a whole new meaning, as he turns out savory, works of art, that delight the palate and the senses.
I had the best intention of capturing the food on film, but each time our server set a delectable plate in front of me, I forgot all about the camera and went for my fork. I ordered the Filet Mignon, which was served with a Cabernet Demi Glace, and literally melted in my mouth. My son ordered the Salmon with Spinach Risotto, which was as equally delicious. For dessert I highly recommend the Chocolate Flourless Torte topped with rich Vanilla Ice Cream - You won't be sorry!
If lounging poolside, is not your thing, then there are lots of activities to keep you busy. The Adventure and Wellness program provides it's guests with exercise classes, heated swimming pools, a tennis club, and even a personal trainer at the resort's fitness program. The hotel also offers programs for children so parents can have a bit of adult time without an ounce of guilt.
The island is accessible by bicycle should you choose to pedal your way into the world of exploration. A shopping excursion in nearby Edgartown, is a must for all you fashionistas out there. You can even follow your day of shopping up with a relaxing massage back at the resort.
The lobby greets guests with gorgeous floral displays that are lovingly changed on a regular basis, by a local florist. He goes into Boston's finest flower market once a week and stocks up on the most fragrant, exquisite flowers for arrangements that he artfully and lovingly displays.
The library area off of the main lobby is a comfortable spot to curl up with a book and a cup of coffee, pick out a dvd for a rainy day, or indulge in a board game with the kids.
I knew I liked this resort the minute I saw two of my favorite words displayed: BELIEVE and INSPIRE. Definitely words I live by.
Three more words that always make me smile: PATH TO BEACH! Jordan and I had the entire beach to ourselves, but even in the busy summer months, this beach is big enough that it would not be over crowded. The pristine sand and blue waters, stretch for miles, instantly putting one at ease.
After a long, challenging, New England winter, this was the exact prescription the Doctor ordered: Take two deep breaths of fresh sea air, and frolic in the sand for complete health and restoration.
This is the view from South Beach. It gives you a bit of an idea how close the actual beach is to the property.
Right out of a Harry Potter movie, this life sized chess set is a hit with kids of all ages. My son beat me at chess but I'll admit we equally stunk at ping pong, although we did chuckle the entire time.
It's good to be Queen - if even only for a day. Now that I'm back home, I'm already mentally planning my return. We were invited back and were told that Autumn is a lovely time to visit. The island tourists clear out, and the weather is still warm. What do you think? Want to join me? See you then!
I would like to personally thank the very charming, Dan Scully, General Manager, for taking us on a personal tour and treating us like royalty. I would also like to thank, Mark Snider, Owner of Winnetu Resort, and his entire staff for being so lovely to work with.
