It's That Time Already? Seriously?

I'm still trying to figure out how to get off my holiday weight, while Valentine's candy and Lindt truffles torment me at every turn. I'm a one-season-at-a-time type of gal, (or more likely, just a procrastinator). I'll forget about cooking a corned beef until the day before St. Paddy's, and color Easter eggs just as Peter Cottontail is about to hop his furry butt my way.

One day last week my ability to procrastinate was swiftly put to a halt.

Me to Daughter: You got any plans today?

Daughter: Yeah. I'm going to look at prom gowns with my friends.

Me: What? When is prom?

Daughter: The end of April. People are already buying them. Last year I waited to long, remember how hard it was to find a dress?

I'm blaming her date for that one - he waited to the last minute to ask her and then we had to scurry to find a dress.

I think it's all a little out of control. It's January for pete's sake. High School girls have taken prom preparations to a whole new level - Miss America contestants are not even putting half the effort into preparing for the pageant.

We've got the date on the calendar to go looking at gowns and I've been the assigned make up artist for her and her friends on the big day.

If you are a Mother of teens, please tell me if it is like this everywhere, or just my town? It seems like, "prom season," starts earlier and earlier every year.

  1. Debby..you had me laughing AND nodding in total agreement.ITS CRAZY! The day after Christmas they were unloading Valentines day items! I am sure Easter products will be out any day now.....is it too early to start thinking about Christmas? JUST KIDDING! Our prom is later...but shockingly yes its being talked about. We need to slow it down...life is moving way too fast for me, totally was born in the wrong era! Your pictures above are a draem!

  2. Oh believe me, we are at the local malls every day for our daily walks and I started to see prom dresses in the windows during CHRISTMAS! YES! The commercial world will not let us rest, will they dearest?

YOU are going to perform magic on those young things, and they will sparkle. I remember one year a friend went to the prom ALONE and had the best time in the world. She hung out with the rest of us, but she had no date and was just flitting around and dancing on her own. Now that's courage!

Have fun looking for those gowns! Anita

  3. Hi Debby, It is like this everywhere. In fact, the high school girls I teach will spend between $300-600 on a dress...seriously! They have already begun to shop. Some of them will get gowns from RENT THE RUNWAY...that's smarter. The money they spend on these events just blow me away!

  6. It's big time like that in Texas. I'm just as happy to go early and get it over with. Otherwise, my girls would stress so much over it.

  7. My Mom & I popped into a store just days after Christmas & they had Valentine's Day & Easter items displayed! Now one month later, it seems like this is the norm at every store. Crazy!

  9. I alway found the combination of clothing shopping and teens (and especially tweens) so challenging. I've been know to be that hysterical crying mom in the mall when all I want to do is buy my kids the really pretty and stylish (cummon' you know I know fashion) clothes and they want the hideous embarrassing stuff. And they give me that sassy attitude because I want to spend money on them to make them look beautiful...wha?? So I empathize and wish you luck, although your daugher seems really wondeful! On a different note, I'm vacationing in a middle eastern country where the antiquity and architecture is amazing, the wifi sucks (that's why I'm not posting pics), and the glamour is nil...so thanks for these amazing pics to drink in!

  10. My neighbor girl was just talking to me about going shopping with her for her prom dress. I thought...what, in January! How fun you are going to be their make up artist for the day! I need you to fly out here and be mine for an upcoming party I have. You're a pro!

  11. Already been through this.. and yep.. it's rediculous. The money and who has the best dress, who's your date, and my mom is paying for a party bus.. and of course there are some that have professional photos done. It's not good for the kids.. my opinion.

Also.. Tired of the rush, hurry, and spend with regards to valentines day or should I say hallmark day?

  12. Debby,
Honestly, April?! My adult sons have been out of high school for some time but it was always held in June. But in Southern California they go to class until the 3rd week in June.
Pretty dress and shoes you've shown us.

  14. I removed my comment above due to a misspelling..
It starts even before high school prom here in sunny Florida. When my oldest of two sons was in 8th grade, yes 8th grade!!, his date for the 8th grade graduation dance told him that she was going to look for another boy to take her because I was not willing to spring for a limo! I thought there were better ways to spend $400. She then said she didn't want to go to the dance like a 'hick' in my big pick up truck. Mind you the 'hick' truck cost over $50,000 and was new that year. But her best friend was going in a limo, so she wouldn't accept anything less.
So my son ended up by going with a group of 'outcast' boys, and had a great time anyway. Unfortunately, their cry was "Bros before hoes". I then had to have a little discussion about that.....

    1. As the mom of 3 daughters, this year will mark our family's 8th prom, and I have to agree, it's just short of a Broadway production. We chaperoned the after-party last year, and my daughter and her friends were discussing next year's dresses before the night was over!

  15. I so agree about being too early to look for Prom dresses…but then again,,I don't have to worry about it! So, I guess I would start looking and be ahead of the game! Can't wait to check out your give away…so very glad I'm finally able to start reading my favorite blogs again! I've missed reading yours for sure! Hope you are doing well!

  21. I'm pretty sure that gown above is by designer J'Aton. I can't find that exact dress for sale anywhere online, but if you Google some of their dresses, most of them seem to feature that embellished, scalloped design.
