a poignant lesson from a young man

"The world is full of lessons. I bumped into a homeless man tonight and we had a 15 minute conversation on life and politics. The man was clearly intelligent, but definitely had made mistakes. The homeless suffer from more than just being broke. They are abandoned and shunned. The homeless at least need encouragement. Next time you see a man, head down in the cold; keep in mind he's a person just like you."  - Jordan Steele

When I read this on my son's Facebook status, my eyes welled up with tears. He is your typical 20 year old - BassNectar pounding through the stereo speakers, a cloud of cologne following him from room to room, and a knack for noticing any pretty girl who passes his way. He's your typical college Sophomore. Every so often I am given a glimpse at the layers of depth that lie beneath the surface, and reveal the compassionate young man he is becoming.

I think Jordan said it best. No one should be shunned or abandoned, especially those out in the cold. Bravo.

  4. Debby,
What a poignant post from your son! I am always so humbled when I either see Alexandra and Graham in a different way, or I learn something profound just by listening to them.
Yours is truly a young man to be proud of.

  10. What a handsome and caring young man. Clearly some good mothering has happened in his life. So can we arrange the marriage between one of my daughters and your handsome son soon?
We mothers live for moments like those. When the goodness just seeps out of our children and we get to witness it. One of the reasons I LOVE facebook-

  15. Debby, my heart just totally melted!! What a wonderful, sensitive, humble and handsome young man you have, I know you are soooo proud of him! In a world full of selfish, instant gratification minded younger generation, he is truly a gem. I pray my daughter is fortunate enough to meet someone like your son, who has clearly been raised by a wonderful, thoughtful and caring mother. Have a great weekend!!

  20. Yes..NOT something you'd expect to read a 20 year old's FB. He is handsome and has a wonderful smile .. and most importantly he is a thoughtful and caring individual that has compassion and recognizes potential in people.
