Indian Summer

Just when I thought I could put my flip flops away for the season, summer makes it's return. Summer has decided it's not quite ready exit, filling the air with a heavy, muggy haze, typical of a New England Indian Summer. Native Americans believed Indian Summer was caused by a warm wind sent from their God. I think Mother Nature just isn't good at decision making. She's probably one of those that can't decide on what outfit to wear, takes a whole 10 minutes picking out a nail color for a pedicure and makes the waitress come back 3 or 4 times before she can decide on an entree.

I heard another thought provoking Native American tale the other day.

Grandfather to his grandson: "There are 2 wolves that live inside you and they are having a battle. The first wolf is selfish, mean, bitter, angry, negative and melancholy. The second wolf is positive, happy, giving, caring, grateful and compassionate."

Wide-eyed grandson: "Wow, Grandpa, I wonder which one will win?"

Grandfather: "Which ever one you feed, my son."

How true is this? If we feed our negative emotions they grow and consume us. If we nourish the positive, the law of attraction brings good things our way. Do you believe we are what we think?

  1. Everyone lives in their own heads...your the only one who can control your brain and thoughts...don't you want to live in a positve invironment? So think positive thoughts and surround yourself with people who do the same!

  2. I do indeed believe that we are what we think and believe. If we believe we will fail, then it will come to pass; if we believe we'll be successful it will happen. It's pushing away the nay-sayer within us that is difficult.

  3. I so agree with what Cara said above, so so true. We are the only ones who can control ourselves, nobody else and we are the masters of our selves!

  4. I love this tale. The laws of attraction told through fable :) Thank you for the reminder Debby. Those times when we want to feed the first wolf, when all our anger and frustration start to lay a feast at its door, that is when we need to remember to starve it, and instead coax out the gentle, giving wolf on the other side.

  5. What a lovely thought. Yes I truly believe we are what we think, although it is often difficult to convince yourself of positive things as first before you start to see the transformation (when you do not believe you are capable, beautiful, intelligent, etc., it is hard to convince yourself otherwise at first, but with effort, self-change is possible and extremely fulfilling!).

Thanks for this lovely Friday post!

  6. Oh Debby, so much goodness here. The photos, OUTSTANDING. The thought and memories of an Indian summer in New England are comforting to me. But the last wise saying is so true and just what I need to hear TODAY. I have been allowing the one wolf that wishes to devour to eat up my time. I need to starve that wolf and feed the other wolf inside of me. THANK YOU for this reminder today. I need to take my fears and be constructive with them. I need to take all the lessons I taught my students in science about posing a question/hypothesis, trying the experiment and then looking to see if things worked out and if NOT, try to figure out WHY and then improve. Life is HARD WORK, isn't it? Anita

  7. One of my favorite tales, have posted it before - along with the buffalo story about going through the storm, love that one :)
I so wish our 100 temps would fade into fall. Perhaps if I start wearing sweaters I'll be feeding winter :)

  11. Yes! That's right.. such a wise old man :) Enjoy your weekend Debby. It's supposed to be in the 80's here (warm for the PNW) I'm thankful that I'm off today so I will be able to soak up a little Vitamin D! Soon we will be back to the short, cold, grey days of winter..

  24. Oh, Debby, it was in the 60s this morning when I walked and is suppose to be in the 50s tomorrow. To us down here that is heaven!! But, I know too well that it will warm up again and it still goes into the 90s during the day. You hit one of my goals in the last two years...not to feed negativity! If there are people who do that, I really try to stay away...sad, but true.
