The Magic of Retail Therapy

The other day I had the S.B. Virus. You have all had it at one time or another. It's formally referred to as the Shopping Bug Virus. With a 16 year old girl in the house, I knew better than to hit the mall without her.

I got sick of waiting for her to wake up and more or less jumped on her bed.

Me: "I miss shopping," in my best whine.
Daughter: "Me too. Want to go?"
Me: "Well, yeah, I've been waiting for you to get up."
Daughter: "It will take me 5 minutes."

You see, my daughter was always my shopping partner in crime. We haven't been in ages. Divorce will do that. I didn't really have the money to take her but I knew we needed a little retail therapy.

I gave her some cash and then we met up a bit later.

Text from Daughter: "You done?"
Me: "Yup. You?"
Daughter: "Yup. You hungry?"
Me: "Always."

We decided on Cheesecake Factory and had to walk through Nordstroms to get there.

Me: "I hate Kate Spade," pouting.
Daughter: "Why?"
Me: "Because she torments me with cute things I can't afford."
Daughter: "Get one anyways."
Ha! I did try to justify a purchase with, "Well, I did almost die of a blood clot," (wondering how long I can use this before it gets old). Then my practical side kicked in and I knew it would be a foolish move that would induce guilt that would overpower the short lived new purchase thrill.

We treated ourselves to dinner and I ordered take out to bring home for her brother and cheesecake for the kids to eat later that evening.

Daughter ponders over cheesecake menu. So many decisions.

Daughter: "You should get one."
Me: "I'm full. I don't want one."
She knows me, eyes me suspiciously and then, "Well, you aren't going to eat all of mine."
Me: "I won't." I say this confidentially because I know the flavor she ordered is too sweet for my taste buds.

We go home singing, full bellied and a little bit poorer, but happy. I am proud to say that I have been cured of the S.B. Virus for the moment.

  1. Reading this brought back such sweet memories. I loved shopping with my daughter. Now that she is married and a world away all we can do is discuss fashion through the Internet. I miss shopping with her so much...cherish each precious moment. They go by so quickly!!

  2. What is it about shopping that makes us feel better? My daughter and I have the virus. We have been stuck at our desks alot during the day and do the online clicking, but that isn't as fulfilling and seeing all the colors, textures, etc. at a store-plus, we always have lunch or dinner out while shopping. Alot of times just the trip, without the buying is the best fix; just getting out of your routine and hitting the stores. I hate that so many malls have the same stores. Do you like malls or individual unique boutiques They are getting fewer and far between. Have a great weekend Debby,

  3. Shopping with a daughter is the absolute best! And oh how I love Kate Spade. Getting out and shopping or browsing adds spark to life and the spirit. Nancy poses a good question...mall or boutique? My preference will always be the small one of a kind shops/boutiques.

  7. Love the shopping story with you and your daughter. My Mom, sister and I went for a day shopping trip about a week ago (we hadn't seen my sister in a while) so definitely times like those to be cherished!
And what a lovely surprise this Friday morning! Thank you so much Debby, so excited to wear the necklace! :)
