Between Dreamland and Reality

via
The other night I was sound asleep. Blankets wrapped up around my head, nose peeking out for air. I awoke to my daughter shaking my arm.

Daughter: "Mom, are you awake?"

Me: "Huh? What? It's snowing," I replied in my foggy state, stuck somewhere between dreamland and reality.

Daughter: "No it's thundering."

Me: "No, I mean I was dreaming. It was snowing. The dog was prancing through the snow. We were in the country."

Daughter: "I'm having bad dreams."

Me: "Want to talk about it?"

We talked for a bit and I assured her we were safe. I then went about distracting her with silly nonsense talk which seemed to do the trick. We laid there listening to the thunder and I kissed her head, lingering a bit to take in the scent of her shampoo - very much like I used to do when she was an infant.

As Moms' we wish we could swaddle our kids and protect them from the harsh realities of life. Life is not always kind. Much to our dismay, our children experience painful situations, broken hearts, disappointments and unfortunately, sometimes cruelty or violence.

We doze off to the soundtrack of thunder rumbling and the dog sandwiched in between the two of us. As the bad dream faded away we were safely taken on a cloud to dreamland - a place where fluffy snowflakes fall and the air is filled with love and the scent of a daughter's shampoo.

Do you remember your dreams often? What was the last dream you had that you can remember?

  1. I do, I suffer from night terrors and nightmares, it's wonderful when I have a lovely dream, sleep can be such a safe place then.
I've never had children but I loved holding friend's babies - that smell of a bundled up baby, the warmth in your arms, ohh it's amazing.

  2. Good morning precious,

My dreams always have water in them. I just dreamt I was on the water's edge somewhere....my dear friend tells me that water means PEACE and tranquility....

I wish you a day of taking in the lovely perfume of summer's glorious beauty...Anita

  3. Its the worst feeling in the world when you can't take away your children's pain, but I imagine you make her feel incredibly loved.
Hope you have a beautiful weekend friend!

  4. Love good endings, and it looks like you, your daughter, and the puppy made the best of the weather. I love thunder, but most don't share that love. My favorite is a storm at the beach. The tin roof and roaring water lulls me to sleep.
    Happy Friday,

  6. I have the most vivid dreams and generally remember them. Sometimes I wake up and think for a moment that what happened in the dream really happened!! My husband laughs when I recount all the little details in the dream. I love the images you have chosen - dreamy!!

  7. I go through periods that I remember my dreams and then I can go months without remembering them at all. Sometimes I remember as soon as I wake up and other times I remember the previous nights dream the moment I lay down to go to sleep. So strange....

Have a wonderful weekend, Debby filled with lots of beautiful dreams :) xoxo

  8. I use to have dreams regularly and remember them vividly. Since my brain injury - I don't seem to get into the deep sleep of RAM - so dreaming has mostly been absent... I do not recall dreaming but sometimes have a sense of having had a not so nice dream. I'm working with some Energy Healing therapies to hopefully help with this. Hugs, C. (HHL)

  11. This is such a beautiful post Debby, I wish I could protect my kids from all the ugliness of this world but I'm afraid I won't be able to do that and life will have to teach them.

    Have a beautiful weekend!

  12. As Mothers we all wish we could cocoon our children.. sheltering them from the realities of life. I learned over time it was better to teach them to cope, and address difficult moments head on rather than allowing them believe life is always perfect.

Sometimes I remember my dreams and other times I don't. If I'm going through a stressful time.. I tend to feel the disturbance in my sleep. It's wonderful that your daughter seeks you for comfort :)

    Have a wonderful weekend Debby.

  15. Love this.......yes we always want to be there with the "magical parachute" for our kids to protect them from everything. I have learned slowly to let go a little and understand more "the blessings of a skinned knee" but its hard. Life is filled with ups and downs, and its just a reality for everyone so its up to us to show them that balance and help them be ready for when life throws us a curveball.

Dont' normally sleep deep enough to really have any intense dreams but when I do my short memory normally never allows me to remember them anyway! .....have a great weekend Debby!!

  16. I'm there with you.. wishing I could protect my kids from everything unworthy of them but having to take in the realization that its impossible.

I have a funny thing about dreaming-- if I get too warm at night, I have nightmares. Otherwise I rarely remember a dream. I wonder why.

I hope the rest of your dreams, and your daughters, are inspiring and sweet.

  18. I know that I dreamed crazy dreams last night after enjoying a delicious meal in New Orleans and drinks afterwards! That will do it every time! But I can't remember them! I'm glad you could reassure your daughter….and there is nothing like the smell of their shampoo or soap or body wash for that matter…( my son is covered in it! ) to take you back to those special memories of them! The first thing I'm going to do tomorrow when Miller comes home for the first time since being at college for a week is sniff him! LOL! I mean it! I can't wait to smell his Old Spice Bodywash and remember all of these high school years that I thought would never end! Now I want them back! Savor their scent! Thanks for sharing this beautiful post, Debby! Have a wonderful weekend!

  19. Know those feeling well. I find its even harder with adult children. I don't think they remember hearing that MOMS know best! Would someone please clue them in!

  20. I still seek a hug from my Mum when I've had a bad dream, or just a bad day. Nothing like a Mummy cuddle to clear the grey skies :)

  21. Debby, like you, I have the privilege of raising a daughter, and we know the many joys it brings. From the laughs shared to the bad dreams nights, each moment is a blessing to be appreciated!!!
I never remember my dreams, but my hubby does! Yep, it seams that sometimos I speak when dreaming, ALOUD!...so, from time to time, I ask him: Should I feel embarassed? Hehe! Thankfully I’m a good girl!!

    Have the best weekend, darling!

    Big hugs!

  24. um, I had the weirdest dream ever the other night. Dreamt that I went back to college to get another degree in Interior Design. Left hubby back home while I lived with a couple with 4 kids. Trading babysitting for rent. The couple had a huge party that night and the wife's brother kept hitting on me.
The mom got mad at me because I didn't fold the kids french hand sewn outfits correctly. Then I overflowed the bathtub because I passed out on the bed and left the water running. What a weird night it was!!!! haahaha
    xo sweet girl!
