Yesterday I gave into temptation and got a hot fudge sundae with mint chocolate chip ice-cream, marshmallow and hot fudge. Let me tell you, it was so good, but I'm not entirely sure it was worth the guilt that followed. It was enormous, and I made it about half through, before I began to feel sick and the guilt started to rear it's ugly head. My daughter drove home as I rubbed my stomach, moaned, and I thought to myself, "Surely, they don't over indulge like this in other countries." Somehow, I can't picture a chic Parisian going at a sundae after her leek soup. Oh, darn that gluttony... I'll see you in Dante's Inferno. I'll be the one with the hot fudge on the side of her mouth.
Do you feel guilty when you over-indulge? What is your best tip to distract you from temptation?

Oh Debby!!!!!!! Dear dear heart! First of all, your pictures today are splendid. That white/gray room? My studio is a smaller version of that exact style. Mantle, settee, mirror and ALL!!!
ReplyDeleteOK. Over indulgence....true. You would never see a Parisian or any other French person eat in their home country the way Americans eat. When I was there, the portions were so small that I had to eat larger quantities in order to keep on the weight. I did so much walking there on smaller portions that I lost so much weight on my already small frame. BUT when I got home I saw how unnecessary it is to use more resources than needed from food to the amount of TOILET PAPER!!!! My French interns that come to work with me every year always come to us super thin and leave....well......a bit larger! They often say they cannot believe the portions we serve up.
My motivation to not over-indulge? My health. I want to continue to be able to move easily and feel good!
You are so beautiful. Start all over again my dear for today is another day.
Fondly, Anita
Oh you gave me a good laugh. A little indulgence is healthy every now and then, shows you still have passion! And I have my share, and we could so be great sundae friends....I love mint chocolate chip too and am known to give in to various cravings when they occur, lets just say discipline is not my middle name:) But yes guilt gets to me and then when I realize I cannot do a thing about it, I just vow to eat really healthy the next day and I do. So be glad you got to even have a moment to enjoy such a decadent treat and make today a healthier day!
ReplyDeleteI'll be your inferno buddy!
ReplyDeleteDoing that once in a while is not bad, I understand the stomach ache but not the guilt.
What is there to feel guilty about? You are the size of a pea.
Enjoy the indulgence.
Don't do it all the time of course and listen to your body about when to stop, but enjoy it or what's the point? Maybe just eat 1/4 of it next time :)
I do love me some mint chip and I love marshmallow - never had them together - bold choice.
Everything in moderation Debby but do I feel guilty when I have ice cream..NEVER! If you do it everyday that's something else if you do it once in a great while I say enjoy the heck out of it! Although I have to say the mix you had doesn't sound like the best but as long as you liked it that's all that matters!

That rocking chair is calling my name...but, I digress, YES, I always feel guilty when I overindulge...but a small treat every now and then is OK!! My new treat is frozen yogurt! I also love ice cream....so frozen yogurt fills that desire every now and then. The fact you didn't eat the whole thing is good!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoy what life has to offer...and these pictures! WOW! Love the colour combo!
ReplyDeleteWell this is timely! We just enjoyed a huge dinner at Ruth's Chris steakhouse last night, followed by a Cinnabon for dessert. Not only did I not sleep well, I've been feeling gross all day. Now I know why I don't make a habit of it. I don't feel guilty, just bloated. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics, love the Trumeau mirrors.
ReplyDeleteAs for ice cream, the way you describe it, you may have lactose intolerance if it makes you feel sick. I'm lactose intolerant myself and I can only eat dairy in small quantities. But I still do! ;^)
I only feel guilty if I'm going through a phase where I'm trying to be good! Working to the 80/20 rule helps (be good 80% of the time & you can afford 20% of treats!).
ReplyDeleteLet's face it life would be dull without them!
Happy Thursday Hun xoxo

Ha! I over indulge almost everyday. Do I feel guilty? Not usually until the day after when I step on the scale. And then I do damage control right away. I've found that as long as I balance it with SOMETHING healthy, the guilt disappears somewhat quickly.
ReplyDeleteI was nodding my head the whole time because I so know the feeling. I totally over indulge and feel so incredibly guilty that I know the pleasure of the act is never worth it. I try to drink a lot of water when I'm tetmpted to eat something to fill me up. That or dream of myself in a bikini. LOL :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blues and greens! And yes - I'm sure chic Parisienne's never over indulge like that, but this South African sure does! I occasionally eat a whole slab of chocolate by myself and then feel ill for days afterwards! x Sharon
ReplyDeleteLove the lakeside scene most of all, and the colors are just so pretty together.
ReplyDeleteSending love, Debby....
I love blue and green together in interiors!
ReplyDeleteIf I decide to over indulge it is on purpose so I leave my guilt at the door so I don't ruin the experience. Afterwards I move on and hopefully I don't make a habit of over indulging every day. You made me hungry for a chocolate sundae!!!
ReplyDeleteLove blue and green, one of my favorite combinations. Perfect to add to our homes for summer, Happy Thursday sweet girl,

I think most of us have can relate to this Debby. Moderation rather than elimination is best. I think fanatical dieting and deprivation creates the perfect scenario where one might over indulge or binge. I believe a healthy body is one that is well-fed (making each bite count) and well exercised ( choosing an exercise program that works for you). I agree that Americans have lost sight of what a portion size looks like and I believe we tend to follow unrealistic or unhealthy trends. In general, French women do tend to eat smaller portions and walk a lot. No one is perfect.
ReplyDeleteThat sundae sounds delicious! Sorry you didn't feel well after though. I don't feel guilt about indulging - whether it be food or doing something extravagant for myself (which is not something I do that often). I'm really looking forward to the mani/pedi I'm getting later today - the last one I had was a year ago!
ReplyDeleteI usually don't feel guilty when I over-indulge, I try not to do it too often so when I slip up it's no biggie.
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm feeling tempted I try to focus on something else that will consume my mind (Crosswords, blogging etc.) That sundae sounds yummy though, I might have to treat myself to one this weekend.
Oh I can relate! I try and schedule in an over indulgence and be good in the lead up so that I'm guilt free! Those spare of the moment indulgences always leave me riddled with guilt too :)

I think in Paris they indulge plenty. They just eat a few bites, throw the rest away and walk home! When I was in Italy there was no such thing as a skim cappuccino...it was full fat milk and it was divine and we walked so much it didn't make a difference. You must indulge sometimes, just balance it out.
ReplyDeleteLove the blue and green btw! Have a wonderful weekend!

Debbie, A girl just has to over indulge once in awhile. Live it up! I love every single image you posted. So pretty.
ReplyDeleteI think we have to over indulge every so often. We only live once! I bet you enjoyed your time with your daughter and the two of you will remember these fun times! Now I am craving a mint hot fudge sundae! On a side note....my very first job was at Swensen's Ice Cream Parlor. I ate ice cream back then to my heart's content.
ReplyDeleteWith my two younger boys away on a trip, I've been over-indulging in reality TV and enjoying the peace and quiet in my home. Yes, I could be productive and clean some closets or sort through photographs, but then I tell myself that I deserve this little break! Hope you have a wonderful weekend filled with non-guilty indulgences, Cynthia
ReplyDeleteFrench women always have dessert and the cheese... FACT! x
