Days In The Sun

photo 1 pillows2+3
This morning I woke up to sunlight streaming through the bedroom windows after a few days of cold rain. I don't know about you, but I am so weather affected. Seems everyone I know nowadays is vitamin D deficient. What's up with that? Our busy lifestyles are keeping us holed up in the office, behind the wheel, or running like a lunatic from errand to errand.

When I do get a moment to enjoy a walk outdoors, it's always a reminder of childhood. I spent 90% of my childhood outdoors. I'd rush outside after breakfast to join the rest of the neighborhood kids.  We would frolic outdoors until dusk and our mothers would begin calling us in, one by one, as the sky turned a smoky black.

I live in a suburban neighborhood. Funny thing is, it's rare to see kids dotting the sidewalks, or running through sprinklers. I find this so odd and a bit sad. Even kids as young as six are over scheduled. Shuffling from organized sports, dance class, scheduled play dates and the like. When did kids stop becoming kids? It's no wonder kids nowadays don't know how to entertain themselves. They are never given the opportunity to use their imagination or let their creativity develop.

I say let's all take some time to be kids and frolic in the sun for a bit! You in?

  1. Good morning dear Debby, what a great way to enter into another day of stress, so I will think of the sunshine not only on the beach, but the sunshine I can create with a smile.....HAVE A GOOD ONE! Anita

  2. Sounds good to me! Nothing like sunshine to cure just about anything...agree about the kids part too, its rather sad. When they are being handed cell phones and laptops as young as 10 years old...they become instantly wired to always needing stiumlation..cannot be good. I am a big proponent for going back to how thing used to be, simple and less hurried! Have a great day...enjoy the sunshine!

  3. I love every single picture!!!

The neighborhood I used to live in in Michigan...the moms wouldn't let their kids play in the back yards (there was wooded acreage behind the houses), instead they'd tell them to play inside or on the street. I thought it was so weird that parents were teaching their kids to be afraid of dirt, bugs and exploring. Oh well! :)

  5. I also spend most of my childhood outside..and I think technology has brought kids inside. It is so sad. We are already close to 100 degrees and I will be outside tonight and tomorrow morning in the sun...it will take stamina. But, I am like so many and need the vitamin D!!

  6. I spent my summers outdoors, and loved it, hopefully my kids will be able to do the same!

  7. We have had more sunshine this year than I ever remember. It does wonder for your spirits.
I think alot of parents don't feel it is safe to let their children be outside without them to watch over them. When I was little.....we are talking alot of years. I would be outside all day and come home at dark, Most of the time alone. I would walk down the railroad tracks and climb over a fence and play in the creek.....very secluded area. Can you imagine now.
I am Vit. D defecient as well. They just started testing for it so that's why you hear so much about them.
    Have a sunshiney day.

  10. This play date thing has gone a little too far. Play date? Translate: Going over to a friend's house house.
Kids do not spend enough time outside. Instead, they are on the computer or watching tv. Babysitting? Lack of parenting? Possible.
Ok, enough said. I am a believer of balance.
    Love the images.
    Happy Thursday.

  12. It's soooo true- kids are so overscheduled!!!! Honestly? I think parents are to blame for kids not playing outside anymore. Parents and crazy people. They are scared of their kids getting kidnapped or run over. I mean, we always had video games and television as distractions and I used to always play outside until the sun was setting. But now neighborhoods aren't as safe as they used to be and it's just different. Sad to me.

  13. I agree! There seems to be a little competition to see how many extra curricular activities we can schedule our kids in over the summer. Mine are grown now, but I used to treasure my summers with them.. having pajama days, painting, playing at the beach, etc.. Year round school would not have worked well for us. Seems too like young people spend too much time in front of tv and computer when they should be running through sprinklers and pushing trucks through dirt.

  14. I'm in! I make it a point to get outside every day during my lunch break- just to get some fresh air. I don't sit near any windows so feel as though I'm in a hovel and could be anywhere. So I go out to reconnect with the world. :)

  15. I've had a D deficiency for over a year now. The sun is so brutal here in Phoenix that we are all sunscreenaholics. My dermo tells me to avoid the sun and cover up every time I have another suspicious thing removed and my GP tells me to get some sun - seriously?

I grew up the same way, it was a magical time. In the city, it just doesn't feel safe to let your kids play outside anymore, at least not in the front yards, sad.

  16. It's true - we all feel better with a little sunshine and blue skies but here in the UK it's very grey and very wet!!

  17. I'm definitely in!! I grew up exactly the same way. Outside from early morning until I had to be called in just before dark. I am very fortunate to live in a neighborhood full of children. We don't have any sidewalks, but the speed limit is 11mph and everyone knows that kids can pop out at any turn.

One thing I do love is that my boys are always excited to get home from school to "see their friends". They have sports and music, but I so agree that they just need time to run, play and be free. I think that's where creativity flourishes.

  18. Matthew McConaughey said get out there & soak up the sun, this is the best medicine. I say I love that sun hat, Debby. For me, the sun is vital, the light from the sun cures almost everything. xx's

  22. Absolutely!
Your are so right, about over scheduled kids.
My best memories are indeed the ones, where i am running around, climbing up a tree and so, with the neighborhood kids. poor thing you can't see let a lot anymore.

  23. These images speak to me ... sigh. I so need something like that in my life right now instead of packing. If only I could hire people to do that for me while I relax on a beach somewhere. A girl can dream, right? ;-)

    Have a wonderful weekend Debby!

  24. I love these! Makes me want to be at a cottage by the beach, but I always want to be at a cottage by the beach. :)

My doctor said that everyone's vitamin D deficient because we use sun screen so much more now. It's so confusing - do we use less so that we get the vitamins but risk melanoma?!

  25. So true about no children in the streets. I have 3 young children (5, 3 and 6mths) and from my perspective it is fearfulness. My children are able to scale with ease our 2m brick wall and escape to the street. It is a quiet street and one I assume was once frequented by bike riding, playing children. But not anymore. I am a parent of today and am afraid of my children being abducted or run over. And so are my neighbours who are very concerned if they see my children in the street. And yet when I was growing up we spent hours in the street and meandering in the woodlands around our house. Something I would be TERRIFIED to do today. What has changed? Has the world changed or has the media become more pervasive and made us more fearful? For me it seems it is the latter. But even so I cannot risk my most beloved. So my poor children are confined indoors most time. At least they are safe. But is this best for them? SIGH!
