She Sells Sea Shells

via
I took speech lessons as a kid. I had a tough time with the letter S and got pulled from class to recite, "She sells sea shells by the sea shore." This was always a thrill because I adored my speech teacher and frankly, even at that young age, escaping the rigidity of the classroom was a welcome break.

I distinctly remember reciting the sentence and even at the tender age of 6,  I knew that "she" was living her dream. Selling sea shells by the sea shore sounded pretty darn good. How is it that so many of us get lost along the way and don't have any passion for the way we make a living? Add a mortgage, a few rugrats, a car payment or two,  and next thing you know we are settling for whatever job pays the most. What about the lucky few who are passionate about their work? Shouldn't we all be so lucky?

Have you ever considered quitting your day job to pursue your life's passion? Do you believe that when you do what you love the money will follow? Are you already living your dream? What advice to do have for others?

  4. In answer to your question, do you think of quitting your day job to pursue your dreams...YES, EVERY DAY! But, after being a stay at home mom and providing education for my kids, I am finally returning to those dreams and I BELIEVE it can happen. I think it is important for everyone to pursue those dreams at least once in your life or at least know you tried...anything is possible! Maybe you are tied to the mortgage right now, but do what I am doing and pursue those dreams in your off time...but don't let the drudgery of life shut you down!!

  5. This has so been on my mind lately - even mentioned it in a post a while back.
I love what I do and even if I didn't have my Etsy shops I would still be hunting for vintage treasures. The strange thing is, I don't think I'm passionate about it. I enjoy it, but it doesn't feel like my life's purpose if you know what I mean.
My husband does not enjoy his job at all - it's just a paycheck. I so wish he could quit and pursue his dream. He says he has no idea what that would be and as you said, a mortgage and a kid in law school means we need that paycheck :)
    What's your dream job D?

  7. Ah Debby, this makes me so excited for lazy summer days. As far as work, I'm lucky enough to have my dream job. A few times I thought I'd like to pursue something else, illustration or event planning, but I quickly realized that I'm lucky enough to get to play with makeup all day and who would want to change that? :) xoxo

  9. The first thing I did when I read the title of your blog was to try to say it 5 times! :) Following your dreams and being passionate about what you do - whatever you do.. do it well and you will be successful. I am on my second career. After working 15 yrs as a Nutritionist in a medical center, I spent a few years home with the kids, and then "re-invented" my self (very difficult) and went into Medical Aesthetics (not as glamorous as is sounds). Not as lucrative of a career as I'd hoped for but exactly what I set out to do. I try to always look forward and not allow fear of failure to get the best of me. Wishing you a happy and productive day Debby!

  11. Luckily I'm one of those people who loves what she does and trust me I'm thankful for it every single day! I'll never get rich from my job but that really isn't the point, I would rather be happy. The only advice I can give is to do what you love and trust me what is meant to follow will!

  15. Debby,
I definitely feel blessed that my husband carries the heavy load when it comes to work. And, he seems to fed by it, so that's good. I worked in the corporate arena for 14 years, so to have the privilege to stay at home with my boys while they are young is a complete gift. I think I'm letting a little fear keep me from taking some big steps...but I also toy with time. It's hard enough to get things done now...not sure how to manage it all...well.

But, I am definitely encouraging my boys to chase their dreams. I'd rather them be happy than anything else.
    xoxo Elizabeth

  17. I'm going to be a total nerd here, and tell you who inspired that saying. Her name was Mary Anning and she was a paleontologist in England. You should really look her up..her story is fascinating :)

Also, I completely agree with you. I think we all have to do what we have to to pay the bills, but it would really be nice if we could do so while living our dream. That's what I'm trying to do, at least :)

    xoxo,
    Joelle

  21. Actually we did just that - quit our jobs and followed a dream to live on a tiny tropical island in the land of de rum and de coconuts. We lived there for ten years and loved every minute of it. It was the best time of our lives and we have no regrets whatsoever.

There is a song that says, "You may live forever, but your dreams may not." So true....

  24. Besides making me long for a seaside vacation this post inspires me a lot. In my spare time I enjoy writing and painting, I'm currently trying to build up enough paintings for a portfolio. It has always been my dream to live off of my creativity and I'm lucky to have a family who supports that dream. Great post Debby.

  26. Always love your questions. After raising four and seeing them through college I retired from retail management and finally joined my husband in the family design business. It is fulfilling and fun to work together creating for others. Sometimes though I wish someone else could handle the books/paperwork its just part of life.

  27. My mother used to make me say that when I was a little girl too, so I smiled when I saw your post title :)
Well chucked in my career for love and life here in Provence, and as happy as I am, it's not rosy all the time. I think you have to really and truly love and own your decision to make it work xo

  28. I am trying to follow my dream, but every so often, a nightmare comes in the way. Not too bad of a nightmare, just one big enough to make me think and possibly change things, that's all.....I am feeling a bit down today. Thank you for the daily lift here, Debby! Anita
